How does it work:
When ingested over a long period of time, minoxidil lowers blood pressure by relaxing smooth muscle with its sulphated metabolite, minoxidil sulfate, which works as an opening of sarcolemmal KATP channels.
Applications Or where it is used:
Male pattern baldness is treated with minoxidil solutions and foams to promote hair growth. A receding hairline or bald spots at the front of the scalp cannot be treated with this. In addition, it is also used to help women with thinning hair grow hair.
Manufacturing process:
The process of preparing minoxidil involves dissolving it in a mix of 1,2-propylene glycol and ethanol and heating it to 40 degrees Celsius; blending with tetrabutyl ammonium hydrochloride and sodium thiosulfate to produce minoxidil.
How to use:
Using your fingers, apply the solution evenly across the scalp in the area of hair loss. Put some gentle pressure on the area. If you are going to use other styling products (e.g., gels or mousse) or before going to sleep, allow the solution to dry completely. After rinsing your hands, thoroughly dry them.
Dosage of usage:
Patients over 12 years of age
A single dose of 5 mg of minoxidil daily is recommended as an initial dosage for minoxidil tablets. You can increase the daily dosage to 10, 20 and then 40 mg in single or divided doses if necessary for optimum blood pressure control. A dosage range of 10 to 40mg per day is usually effective. The maximum daily dosage is 100 mg.
Patients under 12 years of age
Minoxidil is initially administered as a single daily dose of 0.2 mg/kg. To obtain the best blood pressure control, the dosage can be increased in 50 to 100% increments. For most people, 0.25 - 1 mg/kg/day is an effective dosage range. Taking more than 50 mg daily is not recommended. Dose frequency: The magnitude of the intraday fluctuation in arterial pressure is directly linked to the severity of the pressure reduction following minoxidil therapy.
Frequency of dosage adjustment
The dosage should be titrated according to the individual's response to the drug. An interval of at least three days should be left between dosage adjustments since full effect of a dose cannot be realized for at least that period of time. Patients with hypertension whose care is carefully monitored can benefit from dose adjustments every 6 hours.
