Clopidogrel bisulfate (Plavix) is an anti-platelet drug. It prevents platelets from clumping together to form blood clots. Clopidogrel prevents blood clots by irreversibly binding to the P2Y12 receptor on platelets and preventing adenosine diphosphate (ADP) from activating platelets. Plavix is a prescription medication used to treat symptoms such as a stroke, blood clot, and serious heart problems.

Plavix (clopidogrel bisulfate) belongs to the class of thienopyridine that inhibits platelet aggregation and so inhibits aspects of blood clotting, and it is used to treat patients with ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction (MI), as well as acute coronary syndrome (AKS).

It along with Coumadin (warfarin) is used as anticoagulants (blood thinners) during the treatment of patients with acute coronary syndrome, peripheral vascular disease, ischemic strokes and heart attack.
